Sony is finally upgrading its CFexpress Type A memory cards: the CEA-G1920T (1920 GB) and CEA-G960T (960 GB), along with the new MRW-G3 card reader.

These cards offer peak read speeds of 1,800 MB/s and write speeds of 1,700 MB/s—thanks to full CFexpress 4.0 hardware support. This means they don’t just outpace every SD card on the market, but they’re also more than twice as fast as Sony’s earlier cards.

CFexpress 4.0 doubles the theoretical maximum throughput of the card. And brands like ProGrade Digital and Nextorage had already brought the technology to their CFexpress Type B cards in late 2023.

So even though Sony may be a bit late to the CFexpress 4.0 game, these new cards are tailor‑made for Sony Cinema Line and Alpha mirrorless cameras, offering higher speeds during capture and increasing efficiency during video and photo workflows for professional creators.

“The CEA-G series meets the VPG400 standard for sustained 400 MB/s video capture, enabling consistent performance for long-form 4K/8K video and high-speed burst shooting” Sony says.

Sony didn’t stop at raw speed. These cards meet Sony’s TOUGH specification, meaning they shrug off drops, bends, dust, water, X‑rays, and extreme temperatures. (Hopefully, fewer cards will be affected this time!)

And since the upgrade is baked into the hardware, there’s no firmware hack to unlock these rates—you’ll need the new cards to get the faster speeds.

Finally, let’s not forget that Sony needed an upgraded card reader to get along with these new cards. And that comes in the form of the MRW‑G3 card reader, which brings CFexpress 4.0 and USB 4.0 40 Gbps connectivity together in a rugged, thermally efficient package!
